Honorary Degrees

The University of Alberta welcomes the nomination of worthy individuals for honorary degrees.  Any member of the public or the University community may submit nominations.

The vision of the University of Alberta is to inspire the human spirit through outstanding achievements in learning, discovery and citizenship in a creative community, building one of the world's great universities for the public good.  This vision will be reflected in the individuals who receive honorary degrees from the University.

Nomination Deadlines are June 30th for Spring Convocation and February 15th for Fall Convocation. To make a nomination, review the Honorary Degree Nominations page.

Honorary degrees are intended to honour individuals whose extraordinary intellectual or artistic achievements or significant service to society set a standard of excellence and merit the University's highest honour.  In accepting an honorary degree, the recipient also honours the spirit of the university.

The University of Alberta celebrates inspiring role models and transformative legacies in all fields of endeavour.
  • Leading academics in all disciplines and creative minds in arts and performance
  • Public intellectuals and opinion-makers
  • Visionary leaders and exemplary public figures
  • Community builders and philanthropists
Honorary degrees are conferred honoris causa, "for the sake of honor". Honorary degrees are awarded as one of three types: Doctor of Laws, honoris causa; Doctor of Letters, honoris causa; or Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

At the University of Alberta, Honorary Degrees are not awarded posthumously and generally not to any of the following: current faculty or staff; current members of the Board of Governors and the Senate; and current holders of political office in Canada.

The University of Alberta Senate's Honorary Degrees Committee chooses the honorees and is composed of a broad representation from the community, including a mix of the following: the President; representatives from the academic community including Deans and/or Professors; and representatives from the Support Staff, the Alumni Association, the Students' Union, the Graduate Students' Association and the community.
